The National Wild and Scenic River System is a vital initiative safeguarding some of America’s most pristine waterways. Established by Congress in 1968, its mission is twofold: to preserve the outstanding natural, cultural, and recreational values of selected rivers and to ensure that they remain free-flowing, undammed, and unpolluted for future generations to enjoy. This system protects over 12,000 miles of rivers across the United States, fostering biodiversity, providing habitat for diverse wildlife, and offering unparalleled opportunities for outdoor recreation and exploration. Through its stewardship efforts, the National Wild and Scenic River System serves as a beacon of conservation, celebrating the beauty and resilience of our nation’s rivers.
